OLD's COOL Mother and daughter
Deep, intense, joyful, but often complicated. Relationships between mothers and daughters take a thousand forms. Eight of them are captured in the exhibition MOTHER AND DAUGHTER, prepared by the Elpida organisation in collaboration with photographer Bet Orten and stylist Veronika Ruppert. It will be on display from 14 June to 13 August 2019 on the Embankment on Rašín's Embankment in Prague. At the opening, which takes place on Thursday 13 June at 6pm, Elpida will christen the Elpida magazine, which recaps five years of OLD's COOL exhibitions, and will feature performances by popular singers from the Elpida choir.
Eighteen women from a variety of disciplines and ages have joined the project. They give visitors a glimpse into the fragile mother-daughter relationshipactresses Eva Holubová, Lenka Krobotová and Jenovéfa Boková, singer Monika Načeva, singer-songwriter Katarzia, make-up artist Margita Skřenková, the first Czech woman to complete the Dakar Rally Olga Roučková, but alsosenior citizen Emílie Cicvárková, a former fine office machine mechanic who is the singer of the Elpida choir.
"In the photographs, I wanted to accentuate the similarity and the otherness of our relationships. I tried to find the key and invent each shot as a staged image, a scene of a relationship, a generational discourse... Although the individual photographs were premeditated, it was only the very moment when the actors stood in front of the camera that the relationship was clearly illustrated. Their affection, similarity or, on the contrary, their distance. Their inability to hold their mother's hand. Playing a little girl who's still a bit angry with her mother. Other times, the desire to be the more beautiful one, or the one cared for. Photographing mothers and daughters has shown me the multi-layered relationships women have with each other," explains photographer Bet Orten.

However, it is not only the photographs that bring the relationship between mothers and daughters closer, but also the quotes that express their feelings towards the other. The authors of the exhibition asked all women to complete 8 sentences. And although they asked 18 women, they did not get two identical answers.
"I always think of you when...""You gave me good advice when...""You made me laugh when...""I always want to remember how...""I've always liked you...""You look best...""I'd like to go with you...""You made me learn that..."
The exhibition thus aims not only to reveal the diversity of relationships, but to inspire visitors to think about how they would complete the sentences. A special website www.matkaadcera.cz has been created for the exhibition where anyone can share their feelings and emotions (anonymously).
The author duo Orten_Ruppert has been cooperating with Elpida, which has long been dedicated to promoting active ageing, breaking down stereotypes and intergenerational dialogue, for five years. And the relationship between mother and daughter is one of the most natural intergenerational relationships.
As in previous years, the photographs will be exhibited in a public space - on the walls of Prague's Náplavka from 14 June to 13 August 2019.

With the OLD's COOL campaign, Elpida points out that ageing is not only linked to illness, physical hardship, poverty or economic dependence on the young. Most seniors do not need our pity, compassion or intensive care. They represent a much more diverse social group than that presented by the current media. Many seniors deserve our respect and attention for their wealth of experience and what they have accomplished in life.
